MONROE
COUNTY (NY) VOLUNTEER FIRE POLICE ASSOCIATION TO OBTAIN AEROLIGHT
WEARABLE ILLUMINATION DEVICES
ROCHESTER,
NY – (December 14, 2005) – The Monroe County Volunteer
Fire Police Association will soon be the nation's first emergency
responders authorized to use AeroLight™ wearable self-illuminating
gear at emergency scenes in Upstate New York. Approval for
the use of this new technology was passed unanimously by the
Monroe County Volunteer Fire Chiefs Association. SculpTek
Corporation, a Rochester-based product development company
and designer of the safety products, will outfit each Fire
Police officer with three separate models of illumination
equipment.
AeroLight™
self illumination technology represents the next generation
of personal protective equipment. The electro-luminescent
devices emit a darkness-piercing glow that is more visible
from a greater distance than any other light source, especially
in elements such as smoke, fog, snow, or rain. In addition,
each device is also retro-reflective.
This
represents an important development for public safety and
the emergency responder community in Upstate NY. Monroe has
set a precedent as the first county to adopt active illumination
for its Fire Police squads. The county currently has over
two hundred and fifty active Fire Police. Fire Police are
volunteer firemen who have the power to render service as
peace officers and have the same authority as police officers
to regulate traffic at the scene of fires or other emergencies.
Each volunteer Fire Police will receive an illuminated
belt, a sash and
two helmet lights.
Extensive
field testing by the Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firemen's
Association and its affiliates validate the technology. Jerry
Daniels, a Fire Police Officer in Newark, DE and a ranking
member of the Cumberland Valley association asserts: “Our
main concern is safety. Anything we can use that makes us
more visible in today's world is definitely a plus.”
Funding
for the project is being handled by New York State Senator
Joseph E. Robach.
